Hey Lourdes,
I've been practicing Pilates for almost twenty years, and the question I come back to most is this: what do I want my body to be able to do twenty years from now? Not how I want it to look next month, but what I want it to do. Get down on the floor and be able to get back up again. Carry groceries without thinking twice. Travel, garden, and stand tall.
Long-term strength isn't built in the big, dramatic workouts. It's built in the quiet, consistent ones. Pilates teaches you to find your center first, the deep muscles that support your spine, and then to move everything else from there. It asks you to slow down, breathe, and pay attention. When you can feel which muscles are actually working, you stop compensating, you protect your joints, and you build strength that lasts.
This is where barre comes in, and it's one of my favorite partners to Pilates. Barre takes that same precision and adds endurance. The small, controlled pulses and deep holds challenge your legs, glutes, and posture right where we need stamina most as we age. There's a moment in every barre class when your muscles begin to shake, and I always tell my clients that's simply your body learning something new. Stay with it. That's where the change happens. As Debbie B. found out this past weekend when she moseyed on over to our Middlebury Studio's open house.
Pilates teaches you alignment and a strong center. Barre teaches your body to hold that good form when it's tired. Together, they give you strength that is steady and resilient, the kind that shows up in your everyday life long after class is over. You'll find mat and barre at our Middlebury studio, and dedicated reformer classes in Southbury.
If you've been thinking about starting, or starting again, please hear me when I say this: you don't need to be strong, flexible, or experienced. You just need to show up. Some days you'll feel powerful, and some days you'll simply be glad you came. Both count.
So here's my invitation. Pick a class this week that feels a little like a stretch, and bring yourself exactly as you are. I'd love to see you in the studio.
Have a wonderful week!
